Pergamon museum in Berlin

The Pergamon Museum is one of the most interesting archaeological collections in the world. Founded at the end of the 19th century, this museum, like all the others in Berlin, didn’t come out of the war unscathed. When war broke out many works were transferred for safe keeping, but those that could not be moved had to be protected on site and some were damaged. At the end of the conflict some pieces were taken to the Soviet Union and were returned in 1958.

The museum houses antiquities from the city of Pergamon and from Babylon. Many of the works have been heavily restored and reconstructed. Despite this, the incredible impact of antiquities such as Babylon's Ishtar Gate and the reconstructed Procession Way in the Ancient Near East Museum is undoubtable. The museum is divided into 4 areas - Museum of the Ancient Near East; Ancient Greek, Etruscan and Roman Collection; Museum of Islamic Art and the Antiquities Collection. The Pergamon Museum is especially famous for the unique, exceptionally beautiful finds from Mesopotamia.
