Berlin Cuisine

German cuisine is rather rich in fat and extremely calorific. Beginning with breakfast the servings are generous and wholesome.
In addition to the famous würstel that can be bought also from the street kiosks, meat dishes are often pork-based, like Eisbein which is cooked in brine, or are boiled and served with sauerkraut and sausages or pea purée and meatballs.
Boulette is a typical Berlin dish. It's a kind of fried meatball served with potato salad and often accompanied by a characteristic beer called Berliner Weisse.Imbiss
There are also potato fritters with stewed apple (Kartoffelpuffer), Berliner Kalbsleber (veal liver with mashed potato, apple and onions) and the fish Aal Grun, boiled eel with dill sauce.
As in the rest of Germany, the sweets are high in calories and sugary – from the marzipan treats to glazed donuts and cakes.

Beer is undoubtedly Germany's drink. There are up to 500 different kinds throughout the country.
Berlin's local variety is Berlinerweiße. It's a rather sour beer and for this reason is served in a wide glass with a straw and sweetened with raspberry or lemon extract or with Waldmeister (derived from sweet woodruff).

Where to eat
The city of Berlin has many places to eat. For a snack in the open air its worth turning to the Imbiss, kiosks that sell hot dogs, kebabs and potato soups. The bakeries (Bacherei) have a wide choice of sweets and savouries to eat for breakfast, with a coffee or for lunch. Some butchers also have snack bars attached where you can eat - meat of course.
There are also the cake shops (Konditorei) and the Tchibo and Edusco, places where you can order a coffee, but no cake.
If you want to eat comfortably inside, you can take a table in the Gasthofe, where traditional food is served, or in the Kneipen (typical restaurant with regional cuisine). Berlin also has many ethnic, Italian and Chinese restaurants, especially in the centre.
