How to arrive in Berlin
By Air
The city of Berlin has three airports - Schönefeld for low cost flights, Tegel for international flights and Tempelhof for internal, oriental and East European destinations.
A fourth airport is planned that will replace the other three. It is to be built in the area of today’s Schönefeld airport. The project, which should be completed by 2011, will concentrate all flights on this single site.
Tegel Airport
The airport is approx. 8 km from the city and is linked by public transport and taxis. Taxis take about 20/30 minutes.
The JetExpressBus TXL is the main means of transfer between the city and the airport. The bus runs approx every 28 minutes during peak times and makes various stops along the route, intersecting with other bus routes.
Other buses that go to/from the airport are the 128 (airport/Osloer Straße metro station), the X9 (airport/Jakob-Kaiser-Platz) and the 109 (to/from the zoo).
Schönefeld aiport
Schönefeld airport is approx. 20 km from the city. In addition to taxis that take approx. 35 minutes, you can also reach the city centre by metro. The metro lines are the S9 that runs every 10 minutes and the S49. The journey takes approx. 45 minutes. The Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld train station is linked to the airport by a shuttle bus that runs approx. every 10 minutes. There is also the no.171 bus to the city as far as the Rudow U-Bahn metro station. The bus leaves approx. every 20 minutes.
Finally, the AirportExpress is a very convenient option. The train is linked to the airport by a shuttle bus that can be found by following the route marked on the floor of the airport. It takes approx. 30 minutes to the Berlin Zoo station. There are two stops along the route, Friedrichstraße and Alexanderplatz, from here public transport is available to the different areas of the city.
Tempelhof airport
Tempelhof airport is closest to the city (south) and mainly handles internal flights. The city centre is 10 minutes away by taxi or there is the U6 metro line. The nearest metro station is Platz der Luftbrücke.
There is also the number 119 bus that links the airport to Kreutzberg and Kurfürstendamm.
Train
The prize for the biggest train station in Europe goes to Berlin - the Berlin Hauptbahnhof. The station was built to deal with the logistical demands of the World Cup and took ten years to complete. The Central Train Station can handle up to 1,000 trains and 30,000 passengers a day.
Trains arrive at the Hauptbahnhof station from all over Europe, though from Italy you often need to change at Munich.
Depending on which Italian city you come from, the trip can take between 12 and 20 hours, so night trains that leave from the main cities may be a convenient way to travel.
Coach
Coaches are certainly cheaper, but difficult and not very practical from Italy.
The coach stations are the Omnibusbahnhof and the Funkturm in the Charlottenburg area.
